IN a pitched gun-battle with the security forces, at least 10 Maoists were gunned down in the dense forest under Bhairamgarh Police Station of Bijapur district on Thursday morning. In an Intelligence-based operation, joint team of District Reserve Forces (DRF) and Special Task Forces (STF) entered into extremely dense and Maoist-dominated forests nearly three days ago to mount an attack on the Naxal training camp in the thick of night.
As the forces advanced towards the training camp, the Maoists started indiscriminate firing, to which security personnel retaliated heavily, thus, liquidating at least 10 Naxals and leaving many injured. The forces recovered bodies of at least ten uniformed Naxals from the encounter site and recovered 12 weapons including 11 muzzle guns and one 315 bore revolver. The encounter began at around 11 am at Takilod in Maad area of the forest under Bhairamgarh police station nearly 20 to 25 kilometres from Indrawati River.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Mohit Garg informed that the encounter was over and the forces were on their way back. Reinforcements were also sent to extract all the personnel out of the forests. He said that the number of Maoists’ deaths could increase. Bijapur SP Garg talked to the forces via satellite phone as they were in deep forests and in such a hostile terrain that the Air Force choppers couldn’t reach out to them and further details could only be revealed by Thursday night. There was no casualty of the forces reported till the last report came in.
A large number of Maoists have been expectedly killed or injured in the encounter and as practice the Maoists might have dragged their dead or injured cadres inside the forest.
The number of casualties or the injured Maoists could be known only after sanitation. When security personnel are back to base, everything will be clear, said the police official.
The forces were expected to reach the safety of their camp with the dead Naxals by late Thursday evening. Earlier, on November 11, 2018, nine Maoists were eliminated in an encounter in Sukma district. Two troopers of District Reserve Guard were also killed in the encounter. It’s to be noted that police have a confirmed kill count of 336 Maoists in 575 encounters while 3150 Naxals have been arrested and 818 weapons, 829 landmines recovered from Maoists while 59 police weapons have been stolen in past three years in 2016, 17 and 18. 151 police personnel have been martyred in the same period along with 207 civilians, who were killed in Naxal violence.
Meanwhile Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu while complimenting the forces said that forces retaliated forcefully resulting in the killing of 10 Naxals and injuring many. He said that additional forces have been send to Maad for the combing operations.
